International Meuse Symposium - small

The objective of the International Meuse Symposium is to share and exchange knowledge and expertise on (cross-border) water governance, water-related modelling, and processes concerning the hydrology and water quality of the Meuse catchment. Target audience are all scientists, water managers, and stakeholders that feel connected to the Meuse basin.

The symposium series has been initiated in 2013 and is organized by Deltares, the Université de Liège and the Schone Maaswaterketen.

The 11th International Meuse Symposium will take place on Thursday, 11 September 2025 at the University of Liège (Belgium).

Program

The International Meuse Symposium has two parallel programs :

A) Water quantity

For this year we are looking for contributions to the following topics:

  • Hydrology of the Meuse catchment
  • Modelling hydraulics, river morphology, particle transport and water quality
  • Management and renewal of water-related infrastructure
  • International challenges on the catchment scale

B) Water quality

For this year we are looking for contributions to the exchange of expertise and knowledge for addressing water quality issues in the Meuse river basin.

"How do we – in a cross-border context – deal with monitoring, search and identification approaches for sources of pollution and the management of industrial pollution – to eventually reach a clean and safe Meuse river basin?"

Contributions can for example consider the reduction of micro pollutants, micro plastics, PFAS, medicines in water in the context of climate change and societal/industrial impact on water quality issues. Focus on the following topics:

  • Organic micro-pollutants (i.e. medicines and industrial chemicals) and related water quality goals
  • Related policies and practices
  • Pollution source identification, monitoring, and modelling
  • Discharge permits and legal enforcement

Contributions

The deadline for applications as a presenter is until early June. If you would like to give a presentation during this symposium, submit a topic with your registration.
