This session will bring together Distribution systems Operators (DSOs), energy communities stakeholders, regulators, clusters, technological players, project managers to discuss the roles and benefits of distribution grid, energy communities in a decarbonized and decentralized energy system ; what future interactions and partnerships are to be found between conventional and new actors ; how regulatory and pricing frameworks could be developed to leverage business models and local innovation for flexibility services, e-mobility and aggregation.

The multiplication of distributed energy sources (solar PV systems, on and offshore wind power generation) and the progress of ICT solutions have created new business and governance models. The Clean Energy Packages provides the opportunity to citizen initiatives to take various roles in the energy system, including aggregation, storage, energy sharing or electricity distribution. On the other hand changing generation patterns, emergence of new actors with new needs (energy communities, prosumers...) impact significantly the grid operation, making interactions between grid operators and customers more complex.

Distribution grids will be the main carriers of the delivery of EU climate and energy objectives by connecting more than 85% of future RES installed capacity, facilitating e-mobility and electrification of the heating sector. This will require significant investments to make the grid more reactive and smarter to manage renewables and EVs penetration in a most cost-efficient way.

But how will these new approaches be understood, adopted and used by the citizens and stakeholders? What added value does the grid bring to the society, and how communities, business actors can help and drive further the transition towards a locally optimized system? What partnerships could be found in the promising development of flexibility services?

This session aims at showcasing opportunities and challenges for distribution systems operators to achieve the energy transition and what innovative services are being delivered by energy communities and local business developers in terms of flexibility services, e-mobility and aggregation. It will cover the following topics:

  • The added value of services provided to customers by the main grid, beyond the delivery of electricity and the contribution of DSOs to the energy transition and decarbonisation.
  • Best practices on how citizens energy cooperatives can provide services to the grid and drive local innovation, as well as the new opportunities offered by the Clean Energy Package.
  • Outcomes from regional projects (clusters) and recommendations on regulatory frameworks, innovation schemes and business models to be further implemented to leverage market led development of new flexibility services and local micro grids.
  • New services, ICT solutions developed in living labs to optimise energy, manage flexibility and e- mobility.

This EUSEW session will be structured around 3 short presentations (10' each) and a panel discussion oriented towards four main topics for each a multiple choice question will be submitted to the audience and answers displayed live using Slido.
